Ashton Kutcher: Breaking the age myth

PA

He may have just turned 30, and has a wife who is 15 years older, but Ashton Kutcher is not bothered about numbers.

"I think your age is really about how much responsibility you have in your life. The only thing I did when I turned 30 was throw a party – and be grateful that I never got hepatitis!"

One wonders if Kutcher, one of Hollywood’s more amenable stars, gets more respect from his wife, Demi Moore, now that he’s 30.

"I don’t know. You’ll have to ask her. All I know is that I have always been surrounded by older people. My mum and dad divorced when I was 13, and at 14, my mother moved to a different city. That made me ‘grow up’ pretty fast. And when I was at school all my best friends were two or three years older than me."

In his latest film What Happens in Vegas, he plays a 20-something who wins a fortune in Las Vegas and wakes up to find himself married to a stranger (Cameron Diaz) after a drunken night. Do the couple share the money, fight it out in courts, get a divorce – or what? It’s a ‘relationships’ romcom.

For himself, he has found a lot to think over about his own life in a book called The Spiritual Rules of Engagement. "It’s all about how to navigate a relationship. The book tells us that the reality of relationships eludes both young men and women, and being married isn’t always pretty. Reality is when you find out if you’ve both got the guts to go on with it. Demi and I have an open awareness of love and we discuss everything."

He’s quite the handyman at home. "Both my dad and my step-dad were carpenters, and I actually built a house together with my dad. I can still swing a hammer when required."

Hot affairs

Kutcher admits he had multiple affairs until he met his gorgeous wife Demi Moore. The 30-year-old actor was living the high life in New York, and planned to date as many women as possible. But all that changed when he bumped into 45-year-old Demi five years ago. She soon convinced him to swap meaningless one-night stands for long-term love.

He says: "Girls are raised socially to find that special someone and get married. I had sworn off relationships before I met Demi. At the time we met I was in New York partying and I was hosting Saturday Night Live and I was saying to myself, ‘I am going to party, I’m going to get together with this girl and that girl.’ And then I met my wife. As soon as you make that decision not to have a relationship, you will find one."
