Motor Show: Vroom With A View

By Mazhar Farooqui, Leisure Editor

Driving to the office and back home in Dubai is a bit of a bother. But not if you could get behind the steering wheel of some of the sleek machines on display at the Dubai Motor Show.

In Maybach’s Landaulet, for instance, you wouldn’t worry about the traffic because the saloon’s plush fully reclining aeroplane-style seychelles white leather seats would give you the same comfort which travellers enjoy in the first-class armchairs of modern passenger jets.

And while on the subject of aeroplanes and jets, there’s a car which could drive almost as fast. And it’s not Bugatti Veyron but the current record holder, Shelby’s Ultimate Aero.

The 1183 bhp monster can reach a top speed of 413 km/h. If there were no traffic or speed restrictions, the Ultimate Aero can cover the distance between Dubai and Sharjah in just 3.5 heartstopping minutes. Phew!

But then, if your heart could take these rates (Maybach Dh2.4 million and Ultimate Aero Dh2.3 million), you should be okay with the pace.

Royal Collection: Cars Of The Stars Walkway

A classic 1978 Rolls Royce (view photo gallery) used by the Queen of England during her last visit to the UAE is among some exclusive vintage cars on display at the Cars of the Stars boulevard – yet another major attraction at the motor show.

The black and silver beauty is owned by Shaikh Hamad Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, who’s got over 200 unique cars in his private collection near Liwa. The walkway also features a 1928 Ford A model which was gifted to Shaikh Hamad by a friend from the USA and a Shoujaa (view photo gallery), which was made for him in 1986 to mark the 100th anniversary celebration of Mercedes. Other interesting exhibits include a solar-powered car developed by Emirati Saqr Bin Saif. The two-seater runs on solar panels and batteries and can reach a top speed of 50km/h.

How seriously do you take horoscopes?

My day begins with them

I don't trust them, but I enjoy reading them

They're mumbo-jumbo
