Test drive: Not really an off-roaderBy Mazhar Farooqui, Leisure Editor |
Volkswagen would have you believe that their new car — the all new CrossGolf — reunites the qualities of a compact Sports Utility Vehicle with the versatility of a Multi Purpose Vehicle.
I am not too sure if it does that. It’s a decent car all right, but does it have any of the virtues that you’d want in an off-roader? No, sir, I certainly don’t think so.
The car is slow to get off the block and doesn’t have much mud plugging ability. And’s that’s simply because it’s devoid of a four-wheel drive system to pitchfork it from trouble on rough terrain.
It’s not extremely comfortable either. In fact, the only thing that’s great about it is its grip on the road. But is that good enough reason for you to cough up Dh75,000 for it?
At present, the car is not available in the UAE (you have to place an order for it) but one doubts if it will find many takers when they eventually decide to bring it here.
Compared to the Golf, the CrossGolf measures a few centimetres larger in all dimensions and has a higher ground clearance.
Inside, the upholstery provides a pleasant contrast to the colours in the rest of the cabin.
The air vents and pedals are finished in silver, and there is a leather steering wheel plus a hide gaiter and trim on the gearlever.
You could consider the CrossGolf if you like family hatchbacks and are looking for something different.
The lowdown
engine: 1.6 litres
THUMBS UP: Firm road grip
THUMBS DOWN: No four wheel drive system and therefore no mud plugging ability either
Not very comfortable on roads
Not enough space in the boot
Too expensive at Dh75,000
