Jeep Cherokee: Gutsy Buddy

I have ridden my fair share of mid-size SUVs and I can swear that none of them come any anywhere close to the restyled Jeep Cherokee.

And I am not just talking about its rock-crawling and gravel-stirring abilities. All new from ground up and yet remaining true to its 4X4 heritage, the Cherokee now has a more macho and classic Jeep look than ever before.

The vehicle is powered by a 3.7 litre SOHC V6 engine which is hardly perceptible at idle, but lets out a silky roar when you press your foot on the accelerator. Thanks to a new independent front suspension and a unique steering system, the SUV handles brilliantly both on the road and off it. Put it in 4WD auto mode and it will conquer sand and just about anything in between. Other impressive features include advanced multistage driver and front passenger air bags, all speed traction control and tyre pressure monitor warning display, which sends data from transmitters in each valve stem to your monitor.

Inside, the Cherokee is an engineering and styling marvel. The seats are made of fine leather, the instrument panel is easy to read and there is a lot of cargo space.

The SUV also comes optional with an industry first – a unique Sky Slider full-length canvas roof.

The Verdict: The Jeep Cherokee is arguably the best of the small sport-utilities for drivers who need serious off-road capability on the weekend yet need affordability and practicality during the week.
