Love letters from beyond

Rajeev Kheror

Holly Kennedy (Hillary Swank), and Gerry Kennedy (Gerard Butler) are a happily married middle-class couple in New York.

Suddenly Gerry dies of a brain tumour. Devastated by the tragedy, Holly finds solace in the company of her courageous mother Kathy Bates, who had faced a somewhat similar situation when she was abandoned by her husband at a young age. Kathy tells her daughter to be strong, but Holly, who has been a one-man woman for far too long, finds it hard to overcome her grief.

Halla Bol: Truth prevails

Rajeev Kheror

Halla Bol is like an awakening call to the conscience that touches a sensitive social issue.

The film is dramatic and issue-based, which turns out well for an expected storyline. Ashfaque or Sameer Khan, played well by Ajay Devgan, is a big movie star who has come up the hard way and does not want to get into the controversy of a murder he has witnessed.

Inspired by the Jessica Lall murder case in New Delhi, the story tackles the sensitive nature of suppression of truth by people for convenience.

Charlie Wilson’s War: Inside story

Rajeev Kheror

An absorbing watch, Charlie Wilson’s War is a great political satire on a US war dramas. Set on Capitol Hill, the movie does have its fair share of self-indulgent back-patting, but the blunt political humour of the characters will keep you rolling till the end.

The film takes you to the backroom intrigue and to the front lines of covert American operations that dislodged Soviet efforts of occupying Afghanistan, in the style of a candid focused drama.

Congressman Charlie Wilson, a philandering scotch-loving do-gooder, played wonderfully by Tom Hanks, begins to support the Afghan rebels by sanctioning $10 million for their fight against the Soviets.
