The writer’s block

Mazhar Farooqui

Blog-writing gets me worried. More so when I try to rustle up something which I think would be one-of-its-kind, yet incredulously interesting. I jog my mind, trying to find some possible subject, but nothing worthwhile comes of it.

Someone suggested I write of my resolutions for 2008. But since I don’t intend to keep my resolutions beyond the first week of this month, I felt it would be pointless to dwell on them in the editor’s blog.

For once, I reckon I should write on serious issues like the cost of living, hikes in house rents, or better still, the biggest scourge of modern society: terrorism.

Digging into history or crying over spilt milk doesn’t help much. But in these turbulent times, it just might.

To overcome the phenomenon of terrorism, we must first find its origin. So let us urge the governments of the world to commission some kind of enquiry to find out when the first incident of extremism occurred in the world. Getting to the bottom of things would not solve the problem, but it could, possibly, help us get the right perspective of things.

Let there be no misgivings. Much like this long, senseless pondering, my logic would seem weird or confusing – to some extent, even stupid.

It’s not. So consider it – not so much to see my point, but to come to it. Trust me, it would be worth the trouble. But you will not get to know this only unless you come to the end.

Co-existence, not hostility, should be the buzz-word in 2008. The crying need of the hour, therefore, is to overcome our prejustices.

Remember, unless we cement the widening gulf between communities, terrorism would continue to be the most pressing problem before the world. Triumphing over divisive forces is difficult, but not impossible.

If writing this 300-word-plus piece without the letter ‘A’ is possible, I guess everything else is!

Researchers say four cuddles a day can keep your marriage strong. What do you think?

Definitely

No, it takes much more than that

It depends who you cuddle...
