Marriages are supposedly made in heaven, but life is slowly becoming hell for couples. And the culprit is not the mother-in- law, but money.
Cash, and arguments because of it, have become the number one cause of divorce according to researchers. The main quoted reasons are: women seeking financial independence or working towards it (See page 17).
Traditionally, man was meant to tend the fields and women the hearth. However, two World Wars and the sexual revolution of the 1960s changed all that.
In the new millennium the race for equality took a quantum leap. More women are educated, they are a lot more ambitious and willing to go it alone in the companionship game.
Men, on the other hand, have begun to believe in the strengths of women and are encouraging them to have a go at the real world so that they can have the privilege of becoming a little less responsible.
But there’s trouble in that change. A recent survey of 500 couples by Money Magazine reveals that money causes more fights between married couples than sex.
It also says that working wives contribute more than a third of a typical family’s income and women are the bigger earners in a third of married households.
And there’s the crux of the situation. According to University of Texas psychologist David Buss, "being a breadwinner is an important part of male identity and across cultures worldwide women value good financial prospects more highly in a potential partner than males do".
In my opinion, the battle of the sexes has reached a new level… It is not so much a fight for equality but a fight for financial security.
This is the age of the metro-sexual male. Many are trying to find their feminine side… looking good, smelling good and being sensitive to the needs of their spouse and children.
So, why can’t the metro-sexual woman (for want of a better word) find her male side… make more money, take more decisions and responsibility for the future of her family?
Can they both do it?
Yes of course, if they give each other a working chance.
