The human brain is an amazing organ. Researchers have studied it for centuries and have recorded a lot of serious information on this very serious part of the body, but it still remains a mystery to them and especially to me.
I’ve often wondered why my brain sometimes works brilliantly and at other times is akin to a plate of soft spaghetti. I’ve also entertained beautiful, loving thoughts and at times horrible, nauseating ones and spent hours thinking about the human condition and why a normally good person sometimes turns bad.
Now I find out it’s all because of oxytocin and its endless supply.
Let me explain why I’ve come to my conclusion. The part of the brain that plays a huge role in the processing of human emotions is called the amygdala. There are a number of hormones in the brain that keep firing this little bit of the brain and that is how we express a range of emotions.
Oxytocin, however, is the love hormone. It is released when people are nice to each other creating that loving feeling. That includes hugging, touching and when couples are intimate. It also plays a role in social recognition and bonding and is sometimes thought to be important in the engendering of trust and making people generous beings.
All that hugging and touching can’t be handled by the brain alone because we are not telepathic, and that’s when the hands and the eyes come to the rescue.
Nothing expresses love better than the eyes and the hands. When a new mother holds her baby, when a doting dad carries his daughter on his shoulders or when a couple in love look at and touch each other.
As a Reiki practitioner I am clearly aware of the wonder of hands as a therapeutic healer and the eyes that speak without words, but I am impressed with the idea that I will become a better person the more I lovingly touch someone.
Appropriate touching helps children, animals and people who are chronically ill, so why not reach out and hug someone.
Anyway, the Dubai Met Office predicts that the inclement dusty weather may keep you at home this weekend.
Why not spend the time hugging your family?
