Spoken originality

Nirmala Janssen

The origin of human language has remained a puzzle for centuries and although there are numerous theories none have been proven yet.

The latest report by the United Nations however has declared that an estimated half of the world’s 6,700 spoken languages face extinction in the long term.

The bigger news however is that an average of one language disappears every two weeks somewhere in the world.

Hand connections

Nirmala Janssen

The human brain is an amazing organ. Researchers have studied it for centuries and have recorded a lot of serious information on this very serious part of the body, but it still remains a mystery to them and especially to me.

I’ve often wondered why my brain sometimes works brilliantly and at other times is akin to a plate of soft spaghetti. I’ve also entertained beautiful, loving thoughts and at times horrible, nauseating ones and spent hours thinking about the human condition and why a normally good person sometimes turns bad.

Now I find out it’s all because of oxytocin and its endless supply.

Beyond the buzz

Nirmala Janssen

My brain took a beating all of last week. I do not mean that somebody bashed my head in, but it might well have happened that way. The culprit here was an overdose of buzzwords.

Well, struggling with my ongoing education homework, I was clearly told by a group of my peers that unless I got all the management buzzwords into my final report I probably wouldn’t make a good impression.

Hoping to learn something new, I got on to the World Wide Web.

Democratic change

Nirmala Janssen

So Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are neck and neck in the race for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination.

The scramble for the spoils at the Super Tuesday primaries was just really the beginning, and although there’s a long way to go before the elections in autumn 2008, my bet is still on Clinton.
