For a change, Basement Gallery has decided to put the spotlight on artists who aren’t too well known but are doing great work. The creations of several such emerging artists from around the world are on display at an exhibition titled Uncovered, which opened on Monday. The month-long exhibition will serve as a platform for young artists to showcase their talents. It will be a place where brave new ideas and thoughts will share a common place, said Narges Hamzianpour, one of the founders of Basement Gallery.

Tinseltown dreams : Casting call for movie

Dubai-based movie producer Craig Johnson has issued a casting call for roles in his first regional film Expats – a movie based on expatriate life in Dubai. Auditions for three major parts – a European male, an Indian male and an Indian female – all aged between 27 and 35, along with a variety of minor roles for various nationalities, including Emiratis, will be held this weekend.

The movie, Dubai’s first home-grown full-length English language production, is scheduled to start filming in mid-September and is expected to hit the screens by the end of the year.

Spirit of the arab world: Celebrating Ramadan

Members of Dubai International Art Centre are hosting an exhibition to reflect the spirit and the rich culture of the Arab world. Titled Celebrating Ramadan, the exhibition will showcase the works of both professional and amateur artists. The displays will include Arabic calligraphy and local scenes in oils, acrylics, water colours and mixed media. Many of the works will also be up for sale.

Hindi movie: Rock on

Director Farhan Akhtar makes his debut as an actor with Rock On which releases in the UAE today. The movie is about four friends who tried to put together the greatest music band of the country but couldn’t quite make it. Years later, fate conspires to bring them together again.

Food festival: Flavours from India
