Beat diabetes the yoga way

Dr Vishwas Chhabra

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a disorder where the body does not produce or use insulin properly. Insulin is the hormone responsible for converting sugar, starch and other foods into energy.

The UAE ranks second in the world in the prevalence of DM cases.

DM may be caused by genetic factors, but at present, an increase in DM cases is the direct result of poor lifestyle and excessive diet.

Obesity and stress may also cause DM, which is often characterised by frequent urination, excessive thirst and hunger, abnormal weight loss, increased fatigue, irritability and blurry vision. DM can cause symptoms from ‘head to toe’.

The benefits of Yoga

Yoga is an alternative healing treatment for DM:

  • It helps strengthen the immune system. It also improves blood circulation and the flow of vital energy to the internal organs of the body.
  • Secretion of stress hormones, due to faulty diet, faulty thoughts, hectic lifestyle etc, can be controlled by practising yoga.
  • Yogic postures cause muscles to absorb excess glucose in the blood, thereby reducing the blood sugar level.
  • The postures help the pancreas and liver to function effectively, thereby helping in the regulation of blood sugar levels. Asanas (postures) help rejuvenate the pancreatic cells, thus assisting in insulin secretion.
  • Asanas also play a key role in the healthy functioning of the internal organs of the body.

Researchers say four cuddles a day can keep your marriage strong. What do you think?

Definitely

No, it takes much more than that

It depends who you cuddle...
