Yoga and vertigo

D Vishwas Chhabra

Vertigo is a specific type of dizziness, a major symptom of a balance disorder. It gives a spinning sensation – a feeling that you may have if you sit on a rollercoaster.

Body balance is achieved with proper functioning of the nervous system. Any harm to the brain or the spinal cord may cause dizziness or vertigo and the patient may become inactive.

How yoga works

  • Yoga postures like malasana (garland pose) and sirsasana (head stand) can stimulate the nervous system and curb dizziness. It can also increase the metabolism rate. Certain types of yoga help in better blood circulation in the brain
  • Halasana increases activity of the back and the limbs
  • Pranayam (alternate nostril breathing) can increase oxygen supply to the brain which in turn can help you to concentrate better and increase your metabolism rate
  • Savasana (dead corpse pose) also works wonders as it helps the body to relax, repair and rejuvenate damaged cells. It also frees the mind from negative thoughts

Diet Suggestions

  • Reduce high-sugar food and add more complex carbohydrates like whole-grain bread, brown rice, legumes and vegetables to maintain blood sugar balance
  • Eat a low-sodium diet
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day and stay away from caffeinated beverages
  • Improve circulation by eating plenty of fruits and vegetables. Garlic, chillies and ginger can improve circulatory disorders associated with vertigo
