Rescue 999: Medical bus

By Kamakshi Gupta, Staff reporter

The world’s longest ambulance will hit Dubai’s roads by the end of the year, a top health official said.

Three 18- to 20-metre-long buses designed to serve as hospitals-on-wheels are currently being manufactured in Germany and will be shipped to Dubai by September, said Khalifa Al Darrai, Executive Director, Centre of Ambulance Service.

"Doctors will be able to perform life-saving surgeries in the bus itself. Two buses will have a surgical section with a doctor from the trauma centre," said Al Darrai. The mobile trauma centre will prove invaluable while battling through traffic to reach the hospital. The first-of-its kind initiative in the UAE costs over Dh11 million.

"The buses have state-of-the-art technology and will help us deal with any disaster situation. Dubai’s pace of growth is tremendous and we have to prepare for the future," he said.

The buses have been designed by Al Darrai and a team of engineers in Dubai.

"The buses in Germany are half the size of our buses. But we felt it would be better to have a longer bus that can deal with surgeries," Al Darrai said.

Specialities

  • Bus A -will have an open operating theatre room and can accommodate 29 patients
  • Bus B -can deal with 38 patients with moderate injuries. Its seats can be converted into 10 stretchers
  • Bus C -will have a surgical room and can treat 15 patients
