Heat wave to break over the weekend

By Derek Baldwin, Senior Reporter

A sizzling heat wave across the United Arab Emirates should break over the weekend, say weather officials.

News reports say temperatures reached 52 Celsius in Abu Dhabi this week but stayed relatively cooler in Dubai with the mercury climbing to near record temperatures earlier in the week of 46.7 C.

Amna Yasin, a duty forecaster at the Meteorological Centre at Dubai Airport, said temperatures nearly reached the record for June at 47 C in 1978.

“It will return to 39 C or 40 C in the next few days,” said Yasin.

Temperatures are expected to creep slowly upward in the weeks ahead as Dubai fully enters summer and will be compounded further by humidity from the Gulf.
High temperatures should stay until September.
