Belmont Stakes : Brown for the crown

By David Harrison, Racing Correspondent

America has waited 30 years for a Triple Crown winner but, if the bookmakers are correct (and they normally are), that wait is over: enter Big Brown, facile winner of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, who goes for the Belmont Stakes in the early hours of Sunday, UAE time.

Despite an injury scare, if he stays 12 furlongs he wins – plain and simple. A lack of stamina and a raider from Japan, Casino Drive (a half-brother to 2006 winner Jalil and 2007 heroine Rags To Riches), would appear the only possible ways to deny Big Brown his place in history.

On the quarter crack suffered by the horse, trainer Richard Dutrow explained: "It’s coming along slowly, but surely. We’re right on target. If we were under pressure we could patch him today, but we’re not under any pressure."
